Remembering A Diva: My Aunt Peggy

While it has been 9 years to the day I believe since one of my biggest cheerleaders passed on beyond the realms of this world I can’t help but reflect back on it.  Odd that as I was reading in my Harper’s Bazaar the story this young woman lost her mother and her recounting of her actions.  She remembers she found comfort in raiding her mother’s closet for a scarf and a pair of 14K gold earrings.  I thought about my beloved Aunt Peggy.  I smile because I store the items my aunt gave me over the years in one place, occasionally I wear some pieces.  I cherish one of the last gifts she gave me which was a small, gold metal clutch.  I rarely carry it, not even my iPhone will not fit in it, but I cherish it. (smile).

I will never forget calling home all excited about having nailed my Property Law exam and just chattering on and on, but yet my mother really was not responsive.  Long pregnant pauses let me know that something was wrong.  She just let it out “Peggy died this morning.”  I was like “Peggy who?”  My mother said “Your Aunt Peggy.”  I remember that was sitting in my car outside the law office I worked at, my heart dropped.  I was noooooo!  She was getting better.  When I last saw my aunt she was very lethargic and could hardly get around, but later my mom said she was doing better.  I told my employer I just couldn’t work that day and I went home and put on Prince’s “Sometimes It Snows In April.”  And I kept it on rotation for most of that evening.  In the end we found that congestive heart failure and this lung disease called sarcoidosis eventually took her out.   We didn’t bury her until Mother’s Day weekend, so I struggled through my law school finals and went home to pay my final respects.  I recall my sister, Tonya, crying uncontrollably, it was indeed a sad moment for us all.  My cousin, her son, seemed so strong, but it was hard for us all.  She was Aunt Peggy, dear sweet Aunt Peggy; she was momma; she was grandma; a wife.  She loved us all, family was family to her.  What a way to close out my first year of law school.

My aunt was always such a lively person.  She was fabulous!  At one point, my aunt had been a hair stylist, a fashion stylist, and heavens only know what else when it came to fashion.  She was indeed a Diva.  She almost always wore her hair slicked back in a tight bomb.  I remember her always touching up her makeup in a pink compact with this spongy like powder puff.  That was just my Aunt Peggy’s thing.  I realize now when I look through my closets and peruse through my jewelry and accessory collections it’s all because of the influence of my Aunt Peggy.  She had style; she had grace, but best of all she had a heart of gold or these days I would go so far as to say platinum.

She was one of my cheerleaders.  I recall when I graduated from undergrad she was so proud.  She was so happy for me when I got into law school.  And know she would have been even prouder when I crossed the stage at my law school graduation.  I know she was there in spirit, but it still wasn’t the same.

Ahh to reminensce…All I can say is cherish your loved ones while they are here.  And remember that life is short, life is fleeting, and therefore, don’t sweat the small stuff, because in the end you will find that all of it is small stuff.  Do not worry about tomorrow, just focus on today, the moment, the present… (I have to close now as the tears have yet to quit falling…)

The Beginnings of A New Reality

One day it will hit you like a ton of bricks - What the hell was I thinking? What am I doing? Am I really such a mess? Yes girl you are and the sooner you realize it the better off you will be.

Also do not feel bad because you are not alone in this, every woman, whether they care to admit it has been a mattress.

You may be asking yourself what does it mean to be a mattress? Well let's think about what purpose a mattress serves - it serves as a place to sleep, a place of comfort, a place to rest thngs on, but at the same time it is an object and has no feelings and no ability to communicate. This is how some men in this world unfortunately view us.
While some see us as a place of comfort, some men view as just an inanimate object that serves only as a dumping ground and nothing more, nothing less.

Think about it, this devastating, overwhelming new reality will begin to sit in.

Social Media: Is It Making Us "Anti-Social?"

First off, dear blog I am so sorry for neglecting you, but I am back and I do believe I have something to commentate about!  Social Media!  Let's talk about it!

I was thinking today as I walked into the elevator at my office and observed two men deeply engrossed in whatever they were doing on their crackberries.  Sometimes when I am on the elevator with people like that I just want to scream out "Hello Everybody!"  Just to see if they are not too far gone to at the very least be startled by it.  LOL!

If you ever observe the world around you, that is if you are not too into your smartphone you have to wonder is "social" media making us anti-social? Everytime you go to a Starbucks or get on an elevator, people are standing in line with smartphones and iPads facebooking, twittering, texting, and emailing away. Meanwhile no greeting or eye contact is made.

Funny thing about trying to ignore the world around you as you escape into cyberspace is that "crazy" will still talk to you no matter how engrossed you are in whatever text, email, or status update you are engrossed in.  Ever been on public transportation or just minding your own business and the crazy homeless Bob will roll up on you and demand $4, which in your mind you're like "what happened to asking for change or a $1! WTH man!?"

But all jokes aside, The Diva wants to encourage you all to do a social experiment and this is one for those of us who do not use our phones for work purposes, let's put down our phones down when we go into a business, like Starbucks.  Let's put down the iPads.  Let's get out and go get social!  Go to the local watering hole and talk to the bartender Joe that Frank Sinatra used to sang about.  Look up and make social contact with a breathing, living, red-blooded human being in its physical form, not just it's virtual when you are waiting for the train or going to pick up that Chinese carry-out.

This was just a random thought I had today and I thought to myself, what better way to get back active on my blog than to share this random thought with all of you!

Stay fabulous people ;-)

Fatal Beauty: Until Death Do Us Part

Women these days have just taken things a little too far. In fact instead of cosmetic surgery they need to seek the counsel of a mental health professional.  Anytime you think its cool to mosey on down to your local hardware store, Lowe's or Home Depot to purchase silicone to inject into your body you've got beyond issues, you've got made issues!  This young woman lost her life because she was wanting to have a plumper butt.  Bet if she could she would wish that she had just sacrificed 6 weeks in the gym doing lunges and squats to achieve the same result.  What's next!?  Using drywall or asphalt to create rock hard abs?  Either you got it or you don't.  And let's be real, the majority of women with butts are those of African descent who for years were deemed to be fat and not worthy to walk the catwalks of Milan and Paris, but now all of sudden, butts are in.  All I got to say is that I am glad that I have been bountifully blessed and I do not have to worry about desperately seeking a butchering "beauty" professional to plump up my butt.  Some people really just need to learn to be content with what they got because trying to achieve a body to "die for" is not worth dying for.  That's all...Diva!

My "Blue Valentine" - A Story of the Death of a Relationship!

Hello All! It has been waaay too long since I have posted to my own blog. It is my intent as The Diva, not to do this again. I will try and post at least once a week! Nevertheless, my first post of the new year will be about a movie I screened in December of last year that I simply loved despite the darkness and sadness of it.

I am a huge Ryan Gosling fan and he did an excellent job of acting in his latest and greatest with actress Michelle Williams. This movie is essentially about the life and death of a relationship between two people who in the beginning were fun and fancy free. They were together for a time, but then discovered that one person's volatility in the relationship was more than one could bear. The relationship of Ryan and Michelle's characters started out red hot and in the end it is cold as ice, blue. The soundtrack that played in my mind while watching this was Alica Keys' "Wreckless Love," Anduze's "Shakespere," Prince's "Strange Relationship," and Prince's "Sometimes It Snows In April." In sum, what's the point of holding on when the thrill is gone and its just not working anymore. Sometimes walking away is best, especially when children are involved. The toxicity of a relationship should never spill into the life of an innocent child who did not ask to be here to begin with!

As not to give too much away I must advise that the NR-17 rating is much needed for this film. There are a couple of racy scenes that children need not view!

Is this a movie The Diva recommends? Yes! Should you go see it on Valentine's Day? No, this is not a romance movie per se so don't expect it to ignite fire and desire between you and your mate! If anything, it may give each of your pause and who knows, by the end of the night your relationship will also turn to blue.

That is all for now! Let's go to the movies! That's what The Diva says!

I absolutely love this shoe! I love it so much I bought it in the jean color as well as in the wine color. In the jean color you can wear this with jeans, khakis, skirts, the sky is the limit. It is perfect for those who want to wear sandals, but your feet are not exactly "sandal ready."
